Hmm, could've sworn I wrote in this reply last night, but I guess I'll do it again.

The short version is that as much as I appreciate your suggestions, none of them worked.
I'm running XP and reinstalled the latest patch to no effect.
Telnet works fine; I can get the junk and type in ready as well and get more junk.
Disabling the firewall and starting the server before netbeans both had no effect.

I was thinking maybe it might have to do with firewalls on the campus network, but that wouldn't really explain why I'm having trouble connecting to localhost as well. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm open to anything.
