Map editor
How to create a new map file
Map editor provides a wizard to easy map file creation. Right-click on the folder where you want to create the map file
and select
New -> Other.... In the dialog select
Educational Scenarios Map from the
Educational Scenarios folder and press the
Next button.
Fill in the new name of the map file with
.xml extension and press
Next button again.
Select the initial content. The entries have following meaning:
- Plan image is the image displayed on background when you edit the map file.
- UnrealID is the UT2004 identifier of the image. The image is not loaded from the disc (from the
location stored in the Plan image) but it is stored as a texture in UT2004/Textures/TextureFile. You can put
the image there using UnrealEd editor.
- Scale determines the ratio between one pixel on the plan image and one UT2004 unit. It is 32
for the unrealville.png.
- Origin x and Origin y are the UT2004 coordinates of the left top corner of the
map. For UnrealVilleBig map are these -8900 and -3150.
Press the
Finish button when all the data are filled.
Opening the map editor
After you have created the map file the editor should automatically open. The screen will look as this:
If you close the editor you can open it again by right-clicking on the file and selecting
Open With ->
EduMap editor as you can see on the image below. Double-clicking should do the same job when you are opening
it for the second time.
Using the editor
- Zoom in and Zoom out tools allow you to zoom to the image and place the objects
more accurate. Unfortunately, the plan provided is not very precise.
- Rectangle tool is used to create and edit rectangles. When the Rectangle tool is selected
you can press the left mouse button on the map and by dragging you create the rectangle. If you want to edit the rectangle's
size or position, simply drag one of the corners. The rectangle can be deleted by pressing the Delete or Backspace
key.
- Circle tool creates and edits circles. Press the left mouse button on the center of the future
circle and drag until you reach the desired perimeter. You can resize the circle by dragging one of the points on the
perimeter or move it be dragging the point in the centre. The circle can be deleted by pressing the Delete or Backspace
key.
- Polygon tool creates a non-self-intersecting polygon. By every click you add a new vertex to the polygon.
By pressing the Delete or Backspace key you delete the last placed vertex. If you press the Escape key you'll delete the
whole constructed polygon. When you click the first vertex of the polygon again, the polygon will seal. You can delete
the whole polygon by pressing the Delete or Backspace key. The vertices can be moved by simple dragging.
- POI tool adds a new POI to the point where you click. A dialog will appear where you can set the
parameters of the POI or undo the action by pressing the cancel button. The POI can be also deleted by pressing the
Delete or Backspace key. You can move the POI by dragging it.
- Path tool adds paths in a way similar to the polygon tool. The difference is that you don't seal
the path, when you are ready with it you should press the Enter key and the path will end there. If you switch to
another tool before pressing the Enter key the constructed path will remain there but it will be not visibile (until you
switch back to Path tool) and will not be saved.
- Selection tool enables you to select previously created areas and marks.
- Lock area: There are two "memories" for areas. The first is the selected object - selected simple
areas are coloured with blue, complex areas are coloured with green and excluded areas are coloured with red - and
the second is the locked object. If you want to lock an area, you have to select it and then press the Lock area button.
It will be locked until you press the Lock area button again. The locked simple area is coloured with cyan, complex areas
with yellow and excluded ones with orange.
- Add to locked area: The selected area will be added to the locked area if it is a compound area. You
cannot add an area to a simple area, of course.
- Remove from locked area: The selected area will be removed from the locked area if it is already in.
- Exclude from locked area: The selected area will be excluded from the locked area. If something is
in the excluded area it definitely is not in the area from where it is excluded.
- Go to superior area: With mouse you can select only simple areas. When this button is pressed you
select the superior area of the currently selected. If there is not such area a dialog will appear and you can create it.
This is the way how should be the complex areas created.
- Edit selected: The currently selected object (area, POI or path) can be edited with this button.
A dialog is shown where you can edit everything that cannot be edited with mouse.
- Edit plan change the settings you entered when you created the map. It rescales the coordinates of
all objects properly to place them on the same position on the plan as they area now.
