In UT2004 the console command to connect to the localhost server was "open 127.0.0.1" (without quotes) . 
I think it will be the same in UDK, so type "~" to access the UDK console and type open 127.0.0.1 . (Don't know why the server is not displayed in LAN servers - maybe firewall/UDK.ini settings?)
